The New Kent Chamber of Commerce recognizes contributions made by business and industry in New Kent County. Winners of previous Excellence in Business Awards represent the spirit and commitment to the community. These private and nonprofit businesses deserve recognition and acknowledgement.
Judging
A committee of representatives from the New Kent Chamber of Commerce and past award winners will review all nominations and select a winner in each category based on the following criteria in each category.
Categories
- At Your Service Award: Awarded to a retail or service business for making its store, office location and/or website a destination for customer loyalty and satisfaction; and brings positive recognition to New Kent County.
- Made in New Kent County Award: Awarded to a business or industry that produces or assembles a product in New Kent County. Judging criteria shall include demonstrated product quality, increased production and new sales growth.
- Workforce Development Award: Awarded to a private-sector employer that has consistently made workforce development a priority by offering their employees training and education opportunities, or by investing money and/or other resources in local programs that positively affect local workforce development.
- Small Business Award: Awarded to a business in New Kent County that employs ten or less people that has impressed you in terms of innovation, product, quality, service, imagination, marketing and managerial skills. In addition nominees may have special accomplishments in one or more areas including technology, environmental consciousness, product research and development, marketing, innovation, increased sales, business development, employee relations, product/service quality, export, etc. Business must be located in New Kent County.
- Large Business Award: Awarded to a business in New Kent County that employs eleven or more people that has impressed you in terms of innovation, product, quality, service, imagination, marketing and managerial skills. In addition nominees may have special accomplishments in one or more areas including technology, environmental consciousness, product research and development, marketing, innovation, increased sales, business development, employee relations, product/service quality, export, etc. Business must have a storefront or office location in New Kent County.
- Business Citizen of the Year Award: Awarded to a business or individual from the business community who has given back to the community and has demonstrated a dedication to making our community a strong, safer and more responsive place to live and transact business, OR an individual that has served the community as a good ambassador. This business or individual would have displayed a major involvement in community service in the region over the last 12 months.
Criteria & Eligibility
Why Nominate?
In a fiercely competitive marketplace, it is important to focus on ways to set your business apart from the rest. Winning an award can benefit your company's internal and external operations in the following ways:
- Being recognized by your peers from all over New Kent County would position your company as a leader to current and potential customers, as well as to your employees.
- A great morale booster for employees, providing opportunity for their efforts to be formally recognized.
- Preparing the nomination provides an occasion to take stock of your goals and objectives, providing a measure to evaluate your progress.
Eligibility Requirements
- Nominations can be made by any individual who knows of a business that is excelling and meets the criteria.
- All nominees must have a fixed physical presence in New Kent County (two-year minimum). Any business may be nominated (for profit, not for profit, charitable, sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation).
- For the purposes of the awards, a large business is defined as one with eleven or more employees, and a small business is defined as one with ten or less employees.
- Self nominations are welcomed.
- Nominations must include a completed nomination form, a one or two-page (maximum) description of the company or individual (include the number of years in business), and awards or recognitions received. Attachments such as news articles, photos and collateral as appropriate to portray the scope of the nominated business are permitted.
- Nominees do not have to be a member of the New Kent Chamber of Commerce.
- The nominator should ensure that the nominee would show a willingness to participate in the award ceremony.
- Nominations may be submitted for more than one category; however, a separate nomination form must be submitted for each category in order for consideration.
- Prior winners are ineligible to be nominated in the category for which they previously have won an award.

Selection of Winners - Rules
- Decision of the judges will be final.
- Incomplete entries will not be judged.
- The judges reserve the right to withdraw an award from any applicant supplying false information within their entry. Judges reserve the right to audit any information supplied.
- Winners of these prestigious awards will be honored on June 19th at 6:30 PM in the Dogwood Room at RockCreek Villa. Finalist or their designee must be present to receive award.
- All entries will remain the property of the New Kent Chamber of Commerce Business Awards program.
- There will be only one award recipient in each category.
- The New Kent Chamber of Commerce guarantees that all documents and information will be treated in confidence.
- Final determination of the number of categories and awards to be presented will be decided by a panel of judges, based on the quantity and the quality of the completed nomination forms received by May 16, 2012. Nominations will be evaluated based on effectiveness and innovation.
- Winning entries will be publicized. Applicants are responsible for making appropriate arrangements to protect any intellectual property associated with their application. Winners may be requested to participate in post-event publicity.
- By registering and completing an entry for the awards you agree to these terms and conditions.
- Prior winners are ineligible to be nominated in the category for which they previously have won an award.
- No individual that submits a nomination will be eligible to participate in the judging of the category for which they submitted.
- Any application that is considered to be a conflict of interest between a judge and a nominated company will be considered ineligible and will not be considered.
